Description:
Warm temperatures and dry weather has left the county vulnerable to grass fires this spring. Three grass fires along the railroad tracks south of Number 14 road were believed to have been started by a southbound freight train the afternoon of April 11. Smoke was so intense across U.S. 41 that traffic was re-routed down 577. Firemen from Mellen, Menominee-Ingallston and the DNR fought the fire.
Top photo of fire nearing U.S. 41 south of 13.5 road was taken by Kelly Nelson of Wallace.
